Hello! I’m Sophie and my specialist subjects are English Literature, English as a Foreign Language, History and Art. I received a 1st Class Hons degree from the University of Manchester in English Literature and American studies. After I graduated, I worked in Film and TV production for a number of years before turning to teaching. I then completed a Cambridge Assessment CELTA course which enables me to teach English as a foreign language. I have experience tutoring English as a foreign language to students between the ages of 11-50 online and I have taught classes of up to 20 students in a language school in Cambridge. The students varied from A1-C2 level. I recently helped an 11 year old Spanish boy pass his B2 first exam. I have helped a number of GCSE students achieve A’s or higher in their English Literature qualification (AQA and OCR), and I have helped degree students achieve First Class results in their History and English Literature essays and dissertations. I always personalise my teaching according to the students’ needs, and my style tends to be a hybrid balance between an instructor led and student centric approach. My first lesson is always about getting to know the student(s), as this determines the direction my teaching style will take. I love to facilitate inquiry based learning and I think it’s vital to establish the parts of the subject that interests the student(s) most, as this invigorates the student’s thirst to learn. I tailor my sessions according to each pupil’s needs, making sure to establish a trusting relationship with good rapport. I actively avoid putting any pressure on pupils to ensure a positive, kind and fun working environment. I studied Art up to Art A-level and love to paint and draw in my spare time!
